[LEWISBURG, W.Va.] New River Community and Technical College is hosting three writing classes at the college’s campus in Lewisburg with local author Belinda Anderson.
A three-week writing class, World Building: Creating a Compelling Narrative, is scheduled for Tuesday afternoons from 2 to 4 p.m. starting October 2.
“This class provides a chance to have fun and write about themes that are important to participants,” Anderson said. “We’ll explore everything from the process of creating alien civilizations to envisioning the future of humanity.”
Tuition is $75 for the class, and preregistration is required by September 28.
Anderson will also lead two poetry workshops at the Greenbrier Valley Campus in Lewisburg: Writing from Your Roots: Penning Poetry from Life Experience on October 5 and The Global Poet on October 30.
“Writing from Your Roots will begin with easy-to-follow prompts, leading to deeper explorations,” Anderson explained.
The Global Poet workshop offers the opportunity to learn and practice poetry forms from around the world.
“I think participants will really enjoy experiencing the diversity of cultures around the world. As they do so, they’ll find themselves growing in their ability to express themselves as individuals,” Anderson added.
All of the writing classes are designed for both beginners and those already practicing the craft of writing.
Anderson, the author of four books, has been recognized for mentoring other writers. She has been named a Master Artist by the West Virginia Division of Culture and History to work with emerging writers through a grant program. She is a past recipient of the West Virginia Writers’ Just Uncommonly Good award, for mentoring and promoting the written word in West Virginia.
New River CTC’s Workforce Education Division provides community education classes and employable educational opportunities including noncredit courses, workforce development programs and customized training.
A basic photography class is also scheduled at New River CTC’s Greenbrier Valley Campus starting October 8, 2018.
