[BEAVER, W.Va.] Lumber and mill, neurofeedback and alternative fuel training classes are scheduled to start at New River Community and Technical College on June 3, 2019. All three workforce courses are new to the college.
“Through our Center for Workforce Education, we’re able to work with area businesses and develop the programs that they need so that we’re helping employers find qualified workers and connecting newly trained workers to employment opportunities,” explained Workforce Education Program Specialist Brian Sampson.
The ten-week lumber and mill training includes OSHA, basic electrical training, log scaling, lumber grading certification and basic heavy equipment training. Eligible students may also qualify for a paid internship, earning a minimum of $10 per hour.
The lumber and mill course will start at the Nicholas County Campus, Summersville, on June 3 with a portion of the classroom training taking place at the Advanced Technology Center, Ghent. Classes will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Participating lumber and mill partners include: Allegheny Wood Products, Laurel Creek Hardwoods, Jim C. Hamer Companies and AFP Logs and Lumber, Inc. Anyone over the age of 18 is eligible to apply.
Neurofeedback provides information about the brain and can locate the cause of mental health symptoms including, but not limited to, anxiety, depression, ADHD, PTSD and chronic pain. The ten-week neurofeedback course offered at New River CTC will cover how the brain operates, the parts of the brain that relate directly to addiction and how to re-train the brain. The class includes both classroom and clinical training. The lab-based classes will be held at On-Point Acupuncture, 21 Mallard Court, Beckley.
The alternative fuel training is a four-day class, offered Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Advanced Technology Center, Ghent. The course includes information on the fundamentals, system design, diagnostic considerations and special service topics of the different types of electric drive vehicles along with safety measures in maintaining them. The training includes hands-on exercises and contains manufacturer-specific information.
The college also has a four-day CDL Class B training starting on June 3 and six-week CDL Class A training beginning on June 10 at the Advanced Technology Center, Ghent.
