[GHENT, W.Va.] Newly trained workers and employer partners will come together at New River Community and Technical College’s Advanced Technology Center, Ghent, on Wednesday, May 8, 2019 during the college’s annual Tech Expo.
“The Tech Expo gives our students the opportunity to showcase their skills and meet with prospective employers,” explained Dr. Jerry Wallace, New River CTC Dean for Technical and Workforce Programs. “This year, we’re also inviting high school students from our local career and technical education centers so that they can see how they can continue their education in at New River CTC. The public is also invited to attend to learn about the programs we offer.”
With EDGE (Earn a Degree, Graduate Early) credits obtained from the career and technical education centers in automotive, diesel, industrial technology and welding programs, students can earn a certificate or associate degree in less time and benefit from paid internship opportunities.
Employers and vendors can register for this free event with New River CTC by contacting Wallace (jwallace@newriver.edu, 304-929-5485) or Workforce Program Specialist Brian Sampson (bsampson@newriver.edu, 304-929-5009) by May 3, 2019. Employers with internship, seasonal, part-time and full-time opportunities are encouraged to participate. Space will be provided for employers interested in conducting interviews on-site during the event.
Students in the electric distribution engineering technology (line service), CDL, welding, automotive technology and diesel programs will provide demonstrations between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. The event will include high voltage demonstrations by Pike Enterprises, and the International Lineman Museum and Hall of Fame mobile unit will be on site for tours.
The International Lineman Museum and Hall of Fame was established to pay tribute to the history of the industry and to workers who restore order during dangerous accidents and severe weather. Based in Shelby, N.C., the museum is a display of tools, insulators, and artifacts from all 50 states and 15 international countries. The museum has a mobile exhibit that regularly tours the country.
A Tech Expo has also been scheduled at New River CTC’s Greenbrier Valley Campus, Lewisburg, on Wednesday, May 1 from 4 to 7 p.m. The Tech Expo in Lewisburg will showcase the college’s barbering, cosmetology, esthetics, massage therapy, nail technology and welding programs. Employers and vendors are encouraged to attend this free event. For information on the event in Lewisburg or to register, contact Instructional Specialist Nedra Allen at nallen@newriver.edu or 304-647-6576 by April 26, 2019.
Both events are free to attend and open to the public.
