New River CTC and Nicholas County Board of Education finalize agreement to offer nursing certificate to high school students

Representatives sign the articulation agreement

The Nicholas County Board of Education met at New River Community and Technical College on Thursday, June 29, 2023, to vote on the agreement to allow Nicholas County high school students to complete nursing courses at New River CTC while in high school. The vote passed during the meeting and the new articulation agreement was signed. The partnership is the first of its kind in West Virginia.

Under the agreement, ninth and tenth grade students can work toward Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification and progress into practical nursing classes offered at New River CTC in eleventh and twelfth grade allowing them to earn a Certificate of Applied Science in Practical Nursing as they complete their high school degree requirements.

Six Nicholas County High School juniors are completing the prerequisite courses this summer to prepare for practical nursing classes at New River CTC starting in August.

“Our new partnership creates a pathway for students to earn their high school diploma and practical nursing certificate simultaneously,” explained New River CTC President Dr. Bonny Copenhaver. “This agreement makes career preparation attainable sooner for students and prepares qualified nurses for jobs in our communities.”

New River CTC offers the Certificate of Applied Science in Practical Nursing at the Greenbrier Valley Campus in Lewisburg, Nicholas County Campus in Summersville, Raleigh County Campus in Beaver and Summers County ARH Hospital in Hinton.
