New River Community and Technical College to Offer Bartender Skills Course

[GHENT, WV] – New River Community and Technical College is pleased to announce a new community education course. This course is aimed at bartenders and businesses looking to up-skill their employees as well as anyone interested in learning about the industry. The course provides a comprehensive overview of industry knowledge, techniques, and customer service.

The course is structured into three sessions, each designed to offer practical skills and knowledge in various aspects of bartending and mixology.

-Time: 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

-Dates: May 20, May 29, and June 3.

Session 1: Presentation by WVABC

In this session, participants will receive a presentation by the West Virginia Alcohol Beverage Control Administration (WVABC). The presentation will cover well-known and less-familiar laws, along with strategies for handling difficult situations that can arise in the workplace.

Session 2: Product Knowledge

This session will focus on different types of alcoholic beverages and their characteristics. Participants will learn about:

– Wine: Different varieties, serving etiquette, and the “5 S’s of Wine.”

– Liquor: Distinctions between bourbon and whiskey, along with a brief history of liquor.

– Beer: Beer style characteristics, tasting techniques and tips, and proper beer service.

Session 3: Customer Service and Mixology Basics

This final session will cover essential customer service skills, including greeting guests, suggestive selling, problem-solving, and building customer relationships. Participants will also dive into mixology basics, learning about:

– Tools of the trade

– Measuring and counting

– Mixing, shaking, and stirring techniques

– Correct serving temperatures

– Recipe substitutions and development
