[SUMMERSVILLE, WV] – New River Community and Technical College is excited to announce an engaging community education course on the Nicholas County Campus, “Basics of Composting.” This course will provide participants with the knowledge and skills to turn kitchen scraps and yard waste into nutrient-rich soil, promoting sustainability and reducing waste.

Join us for an enlightening journey into the world of composting. Participants will delve into the basics of composting, learning practical techniques to create their own compost at home or in a community setting. The course aims to empower students to build and manage compost piles using leftover food, grass clippings, leaves, and shredded cardboard.
Course Goals and Learning Outcomes:
1. Differentiate between various composting processes.
2. Select appropriate compostable materials and balance carbon-rich (browns) and nitrogen-rich (greens) ingredients for optimal composting.
3. Manage and maintain a healthy compost pile, including turning, watering, and troubleshooting common issues like odor or pests.
4. Utilize compost effectively in gardening.
5. Apply best practices for sustainability in composting.

Instructor Bio:
Daniel Groves, Program Manager for Tourism, Outdoor Recreation, and Culinary Arts at New River CTC will lead the course. Daniel, a native of Nicholas County, has a passion for cooking, regenerative farming, gardening, and sustainability. With an A.A.S in Culinary Arts and over 25 years of experience in the food service industry, including owning his own restaurant and catering business, Daniel brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the class.
