Lt. Tricia Miles won a $1,000 scholarship from the New River CTC Foundation offered to current students during early registration for spring semester classes.
[BEAVER, W.Va.] Lieutenant Tricia Miles has won a $1,000 Registration Days Scholarship sponsored by the New River Community and Technical College Foundation.
During New River CTC’s Registration Days students are encouraged to sign up for classes for the upcoming semester. Miles was selected to receive the scholarship during an early registration promotion for current students. The last day to register for spring semester is January 9 and spring classes begin on January 14, 2019.
Miles is a lieutenant at the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Department where she has worked for over 20 years. She is pursuing an associate degree in hospitality and tourism management. After she retires from the sheriff’s department, she plans to start a second career in parks and recreation. Miles said the scholarship will help to reduce the need for student loans.
“This scholarship benefits me in the long run as I am trying to enter retirement with as little debt as possible,” she said.
“I chose New River CTC because it is close, convenient and easily accessible when attending a class. Another determining factor was the cost difference from other schools,” said Miles, who lives in Daniels and attends the Raleigh County Campus in Beaver.
During the 2018-2019 academic year, New River CTC Foundation will award more than $150,000 in scholarships to students.
“Many people do not think of their local community college as being a source of scholarships. At New River CTC, scholarships are a significant source of financial aid to help traditional and non-traditional students pay for the cost of tuition, books, transportation, and other expenses,” said New River CTC Foundation Executive Director Michael Green.
