Surgical Technology, AAS

The program includes instruction on proper sterile technique, identification and use of surgical instrumentation, sterilization of instruments, ethical and legal issues, professionalism in the workplace, and the core principle of surgical conscience. Surgical conscience is the moral obligation to uphold and defend surgical asepsis and perioperative safety, no matter the cost or consequence.

The program prepares competent entry-level surgical technologists in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains. This will be accomplished in rigorous didactic and lab components.

Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Prepare entry-level Surgical Technologists who are competent in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains to enter the profession.
  2. Provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to become competent and certified entry-level Surgical Technologists.
  3. Prepare graduates in the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective learning domains.
  4. Meet or exceed the standards required by the Core Curriculum of Surgical Technology.

Student Admissions Packet

Graduates are qualified to accept positions in hospital operating rooms, outpatient centers, doctor’s offices and more.

 

Goals

  1. The program will have a graduation rate of ≥ 60%.
  2. 100% of graduates will sit for the CST Examination.
  3. Graduates will achieve CST examination first time pass rate ≥ 70%.
  4. Employment rate six months following certification ≥ 80% for students who passed the CST examination.
  5. Graduate and Employer Survey satisfaction rates ≥ 70%.

 

Outcomes

  1. Apply principles of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and microbiology to perioperative patient care.
  2. Distinguish the elements, action, and use of medications and anesthetic agents used during the perioperative experience.
  3. Demonstrate safe practice in the role of Surgical Technologist.
  4. Display competence in technical skills and aseptic technique in the perioperative environment.
  5. Practice responsible and accountable behavior within the role and competencies of the Surgical Technologist.
  6. Organize the intraoperative environment efficiently as a member of the surgical team.
  7. Apply learned knowledge and skills in the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains to become nationally certified as a Surgical Technologist.
