Paraprofessional Education CAS
The certificate program in Paraprofessional Education—developed in cooperation with other community and technical colleges in West Virginia—is designed to meet the needs of public school aides who wish to upgrade skill levels, but who do not wish to complete the associate degree program in Paraprofessional Education. In the classroom, education paraprofessionals facilitate educational instruction and provide direct or indirect supervision of students under the direction of a classroom teacher. They also provide instructional and clerical support for teachers in elementary, middle and high school settings.

Program Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate an awareness of the needs of individual students based on their cultural, lingual, and socio-economic status.
- Demonstrate skills in critical thinking, computer literacy, information literacy, and values of citizenship and community.
- Demonstrate knowledge of exceptional students and a basic understanding of how to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of the institutional service area.
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the concepts, theories, terminology, and practices related to education.
To be eligible for admission into this program, students must meet the general requirements for admission to New River Community and Technical College.

Graduates are qualified to facilitate educational instruction and provide direct or indirect supervision of students under the direction of a classroom teacher. They also provide instructional and clerical support for teachers in elementary, middle and high school settings.
The degree program has two options:
- Certificate of Applied Science (CAS): Allows students to seek immediate employment upon degree completion
- Elementary Education (AS): Allows students to transfer into a four-year teacher education program through articulation transfer agreements.
