New River student program advisor Donna Polk presents a Kindle to Dyllan Lewis of Greenbrier East High School, winner of a drawing held at the conclusion of College Goal Sunday on Feb. 9.
[LEWISBURG, W. VA.] Dyllan Lewis, a student at Greenbrier East High School, was the winner of the Kindle given away at the College Goal Sunday event held Sunday, Feb. 9, at the Greenbrier Valley Campus (GVC) of New River Community and Technical College in Lewisburg, W. Va.
The GVC was one of 25 site statewide to host the fifth annual College Goal Sunday, an opportunity for students and parents to have financial aid experts provide free, professional support to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Attendees did not have to be planning to attend New River in order to participate. Lewis, son of Doug and Kim Lewis of Renick, plans to attend WVU and obtain a degree in business.
Donna Polk, student program advisor at the GVC, coordinated the event with help of financial aid counselor Nora Overath and a team of 12 other volunteers from the college and the Division of Rehabilitation Services. Polk reported that a total of 81 people attended the event and 33 FAFSAs were submitted. VITA volunteers were also on hand to assist families with completing their 2013 tax returns.
Anyone planning to attend college in the fall is encouraged to complete the FAFSA as soon as possible after Jan. 1. March 1 is the deadline for FAFSA submission to qualify for a West Virginia Promise Scholarship.
