[BECKLEY, W. VA.] Joseph Connard has been promoted from program coordinator to educational counselor at the Beckley Campus of New River Community and Technical College. In his new position, Connard will staff a new Student Success Center at the campus.
New River is establishing a Student Success Center at each of its campuses with support from a $3 million U.S. Department of Labor Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training Program (TAACCCT) grant. According to Peggy Epling, who has been promoted to coordinator of all the Student Success Centers, this is the first time that a range of support services have been organized in a central location for the convenience of students.
"Our new Student Success Centers will offer New River students a place to go where they can meet with staff members who are specifically trained to deal with the issues that present barriers to their success, whether these issues center on needed academic support, managing multiple life roles or assistance with career issues. I'm so pleased that Joe Connard is taking on this new role on New River's Beckley Campus to provide this critical support to our students," said Dr. Allen Withers, vice president of student services.
Connard will assist students who need tutoring services and work with faculty to identify students who need extra help. He also will advise students, administer college-entrance tests, confirm and accommodate needs for students with disabilities, teach time management and study skills and facilitate the use of career exploration software provided by New River's Office of Career Services.
Connard has more than seven years of professional experience in higher education in the areas of advising, recruiting, enrollment management, and teaching as adjunct faculty. He joined New River in 2010. He enjoys helping students achieve their goals and invites students to stop by the Student Success Center in room C3 at the Beckley Campus for assistance.
New River Community and Technical College is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. It serves nine counties in southeastern West Virginia from five locations: Mercer County Campus (Princeton), Nicholas County Campus (Summersville), Beckley Campus, Greenbrier Valley Campus (Lewisburg) and the Advanced Technology Center (Ghent). Administrative offices are located in Beckley.
