College Goal Sunday Coming up Feb. 9 at New River GVC

[Lewisburg, WV] The fifth annual West Virginia College Goal Sunday event will be on Sunday, Feb.9, at 25 sites around West Virginia. The New River Community and Technical College, Greenbrier Valley Campus in Lewisburg, W. Va., is one of the host sites. The event will take place from 1-4 p.m. in Greenbrier Hall, 101 Church Street. Parking is available in the lot behind Greenbrier Hall.

College Goal Sunday is an opportunity for students and families to receive free confidential support in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Anyone who plans to attend a two-year or four-year college in the next 12 months can (and should) attend a College Goal Sunday workshop. The workshops are open to everyone, regardless of age or income. High school seniors, current college students, and adults who want to go to college can attend. Parents are also welcome. You do not have to be planning to attend New River in order to participate.

College Goal Sunday is staffed by professionals who will maintain the confidentiality and security of families' financial records. College Goal Sunday is coordinated by the College Foundation of West Virginia, the West Virginia Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, GEAR UP and TRIO. Students who participate will be entered to win a Kindle.

Coordinators for the New River site are Nora Overath, financial aid counselor, and Donna Polk, student program advisor, at the Greenbrier Valley Campus. Free tax preparation will be provided by New River VITA volunteers to assist students and families who wish to complete the FAFSA that day. This service is available for College Goal Sunday participants only, and certain restrictions apply.

Curtis Pauley from the Veterans Upward Bound program will be available to assist veterans of America's armed forces, and counselors from the WV Division of Rehabilitation Services also will be on hand to assist with FAFSA preparations. Courtney Smith, director of the Greenbrier Valley Community Foundation, will provide information on scholarships available through the Foundation.

Interested students and parents are asked to bring their Social Security numbers and 2013 tax records. Those who have not yet completed their 2013 taxes can bring 2012 forms. For a complete list of what to bring, visit www.cfwv.com. All information shared is protected by privacy laws.

A complete list of other College Goal Sunday sites can also be found at www.cfwv.com. For further information about the Greenbrier Valley Campus event, contact Overath or Polk at (304) 647-6560.
