Diane Tyson names Director of New River's Laboratory Technician Program


[BECKLEY, W. VA.] Diane E. Tyson has been named director of the Medical Laboratory Technician Associate of Applied Science Degree Program at New River Community and Technical College.

The MLT Program is being developed through a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor U.S. Department of Labor's Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training Program (TAACCCT). The four-year, $3 million grant will enable the college and its industry and community partners to fill an urgent market gap in southeastern West Virginia by substantially enlarging its nursing and allied health care programs.

Tyson's responsibilities include development, implementation and evaluation of the program in accordance with published National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) standards. She will be located at New River's Center for Rehabilitative Services and Medical Assisting Education in Beckley. Assuming accreditation is achieved, the MLT Program will begin enrolling students in 2015.

Tyson comes to New River from California, where she had served as program director/ consultant and adjunct faculty at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill since 2006. During that time she also served as laboratory education coordinator at John Muir Health in Concord.

Tyson earned an associate degree in medical technology from the College of the Air Force, a bachelor's degree in industrial technology from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and a master's degree in clinical laboratory science from Rutgers University in New Jersey. She began her career as a medical laboratory technologist during her active duty in the Air Force. She served overseas during Desert Storm.

New River Community and Technical College is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. It serves nine counties in southeastern West Virginia from five locations: Mercer County Campus (Princeton), Nicholas County Campus (Summersville), Beckley Campus, Greenbrier Valley Campus (Lewisburg) and the Advanced Technology Center (Ghent). Administrative offices are located in Beckley.

College Closed Monday

New River CTC will be closed Monday, September 1, in observance of Labor Day.  Classes will resume and offices will re-open on Tuesday.
