Technology Services

Our Technology Services team prides itself on providing excellent customer service and support. We provide solutions to a wide variety of technical problems. And in just the past few years, we've completed building the technical infrastructure required of a top-ranked community and technical college.

Many of the links on this page will take you to services provided by the New River Technology Services staff. Although the links to these services below will take you directly to them, many of our online services that require authentication have been integrated through our college portal (http://my.newriver.edu), making it much easier to access them with single sign-on.

Use the links below to learn more about us, the projects we are involved in, our services, and the non-credit workshops that we offer for employees. Email we administer the Exchange 2010 system that provides email accounts for all faculty, staff, and students
Emergency Notification System the College portal is the delivery system for emergency notifications, but users must login to the portal and complete a brief form to receive notifications on their cell phones
Faculty Academy New River annually hosts a forum for instructors to share teaching ideas and best practices
Help Desk we assist users with technical problems and we administer the trouble ticket system used for communication regarding technical issues
Interactive Video Network (IVN) New River has 18 IVN-equipped classrooms at several different locations and a streaming media server to support these rooms
Internet Native Banner the College utilizes Ellucian (fomerly SCT Banner) as our primary enterprise data system for student, finance and financial aid information
Leave Management System we host and provide server support for the leave management system administered by Human Resources
Library Services beginning on July 1, 2014 Library Services will become organizationally aligned with Technology Services

READI Assessment now known simply as SmarterMeasure, this self-diagnostic placement test measures your computer skills and preparedness for using technology
Self-Service Banner we assist users with accessing and using Self-Service Banner which is hosted at WVNET and available through the portal to all students and employees
Self-Service Reset Password Manager SSRPM is an online service hosted at New River that allows our users to reset their passwords using a series of questions and responses (once changed, the password applies to the portal, email, email archive, ANGEL, and for employees only the Intranet)

Center for Teaching Excellence

Now located in the main building of the Raleigh County Campus (Office #2), the Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) serves faculty from all New River campuses with training, workshops, equipment and expertise in support of the design and development of distance and traditional education.

The CTE includes a state-of-the-art Faculty Resource Center, which features two dual-quad core computer workstations (one Windows and one Mac). Intended for high-end distance-learning media creation, the workstations include the Adobe E-Learning Suite, Camtasia and Microsoft Office Professional, as well as other audiovisual, multimedia and graphics software applications. The center also has hardware, such as HD video cameras, digital voice recorders, and digital still cameras available for short-term loan to faculty (loan request form).

The CTE supports faculty in their use of all learning technologies, including one-computer classrooms, videoconferencing, Blackboard Learn 9, Blackboard Collaborate, Blackboard IM, Tegrity, Brainfuse, and Lynda Campus.

As Director of the Center for Teaching Excellence, I invite all faculty to visit the CTE and the Faculty Resource Center to gain first-hand experience and to discuss with me the course redesign possibilities, instructional challenges, and classroom management issues.

Extensive information related to training and other news and information is now available to instructors after they login to the New River portal.

BANNER Links

Did you know that New River has multiple BANNER Databases available for use? We maintain the BANNER Production, Test, and Pre-Production databases in an effort to provide you with opportunities to test changes before going live. Following is a brief description of what each database is intended for:

BANNER Production: The working environment. This database contains our current production data for the institution.

BANNER Test: The testing environment. This database is generally refreshed from the production data monthly to provide a platform for training, testing upgrades, configurations, and modifications.

BANNER Pre-Production: This database is used for finalized testing and special project implementation. It is generally refreshed monthly or after a project completes.

Emergency Notification System

New River Community and Technical College provides an Emergency Alert System to communicate quickly with the New River educational community regarding campus closings and emergency situations.

The College portal (http://my.newriver.edu) is the delivery system for the Emergency Alert System and even without taking any action all users will receive emergency notifications via a pop-up message in the portal as you login and as an email sent to your New River inbox.  A third method for receiving the notifications uses text messaging to your cell phone and requires users to complete a short form, available in the College portal, to provide your cell phone number and carrier information. Once a user completes the form, notifications will be received using all three methods.
