Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy


In addition to all other requirements for federal financial aid eligibility, students must continue to be in good academic standing and be making progress toward a degree.  The standards that are set forth here are stricter than the institution’s standards of progress.  Therefore, students who do not meet Satisfactory Academic Policy for federal financial aid may be unable to receive financial assistance, but will be able to attend New River Community and Technical College.


A.Cumulative Grade Point Average

1.A student receiving federal aid must maintain an overall 2.0 cumulative grade point average and complete at least 67% of all hours attempted.

2.Any financial aid recipient failing to meet the required grade point average and/or complete 67% of attempted hours will be notified that he/she may request PROBATIONARYAn agreement must be signed and received in the financial aid office.


B.Warning Status

1.An extension of one semester of WARNING will be granted.

2.Students attending on WARNING status must complete all classes for which they are registered and maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0.

3.During the warning status, a student may receive the PellAll other financial aid will be suspended.


C.Suspension Status

The period of ineligibility for financial aid (SUSPENSION STATUS) will extend until the student meets the Satisfactory Academic Progress policy.  While in SUSPENSION STATUS, the student will be unable to receive financial assistance.


D.Time Limitations

Students who have already attempted the equivalent of the 150% will not be able to receive any additional financial assistance.



E.Appeal Process

If there are special circumstances that cause a student to need more than the allotted number of semesters to complete an Associate Degree or two years to complete a Certificate program or if there are extenuating circumstances that have caused a student not to meet the progression requirement after a semester of WARNING, the student should explain the circumstance in writing and submit this to the Director of Financial Aid.  A committee will review that student’s reasons for not having made academic progress.  If this committee determines that the reasons are acceptable, the student may be able to receive an extension of probation or an extension of time.


Financial Aid Implications for Withdrawing from Classes

A student receiving financial aid who earns no credits during a semester and who does not officially withdraw from the College, may be billed for all of the aid disbursed for that semester.  A student receiving financial aid who officially withdraws from the College may be billed for a portion of the aid received.  The amount of repayment will vary based upon the amount of aid received and date of withdrawal.

A student should be aware that changes in enrollment status may affect his or her eligibility to receive assistance in future semesters.  Any student who is considering withdrawal from classes or a reduction in his or her course load is encouraged beforehand to seek financial aid counseling as well as academic advising before dropping classes.  Financial aid awards are determined by enrollment status.  If the student drops classes before the aid funds are disbursed/delivered, the financial aid award will be reduced to a value corresponding to the enrolled hours at the time the funds are disbursed.  The student is responsible for any charges that incur as a result in enrollment change.

Student Grievance Procedure

“. . . to provide equitable and orderly processes to resolve any differences or dispute between a student and a staff or faculty member about College policies or learning activities affecting the student.”  The procedures calls for the complaint to be discussed and hopefully resolved at the lowest point possible but then proceeding to the next level if necessary:  (1) with the staff or faculty member involved, (2) with the immediate supervisor of the staff or faculty member involved, and (3) with a Student Grievance Committee (making a recommendation to the Vice President/Chief Academic Officer in academic matters and to the President in other matters).

In the Student Success Center, we are committed to providing all students the opportunity to achieve academic success by providing a variety of services free of charge. Students can receive placement testing (ACCUPLACER), tutoring, academic advising, test/quiz proctoring, disability counseling, career assessment, and success workshops.

The SSC’s enhance the services already provided to our students. Many students need to increase their basic skills in math, reading, and writing while others may need substantial computer skills as well as upgrading their personal effectiveness skills including problem solving.

Educational Counselors in the Student Success Center help students in overcoming barriers to a successful completion of their college program. Student Success Centers are located on each campus and are staffed with qualified and friendly educational counselors.

Placement Assessment Testing:

ACCUPLACER is a suite of tests that determines your knowledge in math, reading and writing as you prepare to enroll in college-level courses. ACCUPLACER is used to identify your strengths and weaknesses in each subject area.  The results of the assessment, in conjunction with your academic background, goals and interests, are used by academic advisors to place you in the appropriate college courses that meet your skill level.


ACCUPLACER test questions are based on your responses to previous questions. Questions will either increase or decrease in difficulty depending on how you respond. ACCUPLACER tests are untimed; however, it is important to allow yourself enough time to complete the test since test results are a key factor in determining the course(s) you can enroll in. ACCUPLACER test results are available immediately following your test.

How to Prepare for ACCUPLACER

ACCUPLACER offers several learning tools that help you improve in areas where your academic performance is not the strongest. You can take advantage of these tools to familiarize yourself with the types of questions given on an ACCUPLACER test. The Educational Counselor in the Student Success Center can give you resources to help you prepare for the test or for iPhone users, you can purchase and download the iPhone app from the App Store.

Tutoring is a supplement to classroom instruction for those students who find they may need extra assistance in the class to be successful students. Tutors know about many approaches to learning and many campus resources that can enhance learning. If you are open to their suggestions and are willing to try new techniques, you will be surprised at what you can accomplish; however, the tutor is not a miracle worker. In the final analysis, it is the student’s effort and willingness to work that will contribute the most to a student’s success.

Any student at New River is eligible for up to three hours of tutoring per class per week by completing an application. Walk-in services are also available per the posted Tutoring Schedule. Each campus may have both professional and peer tutors available to help students.

Please keep in mind that tutoring may not be available in all classes at all campus locations. Since course offerings will vary from semester to semester, so will schedules for tutoring and availability of qualified tutors. Please contact the Educational Counselor in the Student Success Center for an application or more information.


Online Tutoring through Brainfuse:

Brainfuse is delivered through the web and provides students with expert writing assistance, live tutoring, and more. Tutors and students communicate in real-time through the Brainfuse Online Classroom. There is a 24/7 Question Center for students who need a detailed, structured explanation of key concepts or help with an assignment. Students simply submit their questions and receive feedback from the Brainfuse-certified instructor.

Become a Tutor:

The Educational Counselor in the Student Success Centers are eager to talk with interested people and students about how to become a tutor. Professional tutors are generally adjunct faculty or others who hold either a Bachelor or Master’s degree in the area they wish to tutor. If you are interested in becoming a paid, professional tutor, please contact the Educational Counselor in the Student Success Center.


Student Peer Tutors are volunteer students who have demonstrated a mastery of the course content they will tutor. An instructor must recommend you for the position based on your performance in their class. Peer tutors will have earned an overall college grade point average of at least a 3.0 and a 3.0 in the subject they wish to tutor. All interested volunteers are encouraged to contact the Educational Counselor on your campus.

 Disability Student Services:

Students with disabilities have rights granted by the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) and section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

Disability support services are offered through the Student Success Centers at New River. Disability related, reasonable accommodations are provided for students with documented and significant impairment to functioning. Documented disabilities include, but are not limited to, hearing and sight impairments, psychiatric disorders, and certain other medical disabilities.

Students are required to self-identify to the Educational Counselor in the Student Success Center. That person in turn will consult with the ADA Coordinator for students to a set of reasonable accommodations. Students are responsible for providing current, appropriate documentation of their disability and functional limitations from their physician, psychologist, or other certified official. A recommendation of reasonable accommodations should be included in the letter. Reasonable accommodations are modifications which make a facility or program accessible, thus allowing a qualified individual with a disability equal opportunities.

Students are encouraged to start this procedure weeks before the start of the semester to insure appropriate steps are taken for them to reach their full potential in the classroom. Students with disabilities who believe they have been discriminated against on the basis of their disability should bring these issues to the attention of the ADA Coordinator.

Proctoring Services

Currently the Student Success Center staff will proctor make up exams and assignments by appointment.    Proctoring for specific certification exams New River students require is also available by appointment.

Academic Advising

Starting a program of study that will eventually lead to successfully obtaining a degree, certificate, or skill set takes careful planning. Students need the guidance of an academic advisor to be assured they are on track to degree completion that leads to a meaningful career. In our Student Success Center we have academic advising available to current students when their faculty advisor is not available and during summers and other specific peak times. Students interested in transfer opportunities to a four year college or University are encouraged to speak to one of the Educational Counsleors.

If you are undecided about your career path, there are resources available to help you identify careers that may fit your interests, personality, and aptitude. We have Kuder Journey, an interest inventory that students who are not quite sure which direction to go can take. The assessment is free to New River students and the Educational Counselor can give you instructions and log in information to take the assessment.
